On 9th December, 2021 the people of the United Republic of Tanzania will be celebrating the 60th Independence Anniversary. Activities marking the 60 years of independence were officially launched on 1st November, 2021 in Dodoma, Tanzania. As expected, the country is reflecting on its journey to independence, the decolonization process, post-independence developments and challenges in political, economic and social spheres as well as Tanzania’s future direction in a globalized world.

Taking into account the fact that sixty years, or rather “Diamond” Anniversary is not a simple journey in the life of a country, the government of the United Republic of Tanzania has decided to celebrate the auspicious occasion in special, colourful and memorable ways.  During 60 years of independence, Tanzania  has been able among other achievements to: (i) build one nation out of more than 120 ethnic groups at independence, (ii) protect and preserve its constitution and civil order; (iii) support African countries in their liberation struggles; (iv) champion the cause for African unity and Pan-Africanism; (v) grow and nurture its lingua franca, Kiswahili; (vi) create state-of-the art infrastructure for people-centred development including educational establishments, health care facilities, water and electricity services, among others.

Moreover, during the 60 years of independence, Tanzania managed to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity following the invasion of Uganda’s Idi Amin Dada’s forces in 1978; preserved the only surviving Union of two states on the African continent, and she has witnessed several occasions of peaceful presidential transfer of power from the first phase of government to the current sixth phase.  The country has preserved the peace, unity, freedom and the virtues of democracy and good governance.

Being a Diamond Anniversary, the colouful and memorable events accompanied these celebration includes interfaith prayers, charity donation, photo and product exhibitions as well as a special dialogue.
